Beyond Diet and Exercise: Exploring Medication for Weight Management

Obesity is a complex condition with various contributing factors, including genetics, environment, and behavior. While lifestyle modifications like diet and exercise are often the first line of treatment, medications can be a valuable tool for weight management, especially when used in conjunction with lifestyle changes.

Here’s an overview of obesity medications and their management:

Types of Obesity Medications:

  • Naltrexone-Bupropion (Contrave): This combination medication reduces cravings and increases feelings of fullness. It can cause side effects like nausea, constipation, and headache.
  • Liraglutide (Saxenda): This medication mimics a hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar levels. It can cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
