Dextromethorphan

Dextromethorphan is a medication commonly used to temporarily relieve coughs caused by the common cold, flu, or other irritants. It belongs to a class of medications called antitussives, which work by reducing the activity in the part of the brain that triggers the cough reflex.

Dextromethorphan is available in various forms, including:

  • Liquids
  • Capsules
  • Tablets
  • Lozenges

It is often found in combination with other medications, such as expectorants (which help loosen mucus) or decongestants (which relieve congestion).

Important considerations:

  • Dextromethorphan may cause drowsiness, so it is important to avoid driving or operating machinery while taking it.
  • It should not be taken with alcohol or other medications that can cause drowsiness.
  • It is not recommended for children under the age of 4.
  • People with certain medical conditions, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), should talk to their doctor before taking dextromethorphan.
