Medications Used to Treat Acne: A Quick Guide

Here are some common medications used to treat acne:

  • Topical retinoids: These medications help unclog pores and reduce inflammation. Examples include tretinoin (Retin-A, Avita), adapalene (Differin), and tazarotene (Tazorac).
  • Benzoyl peroxide: This over-the-counter medication kills bacteria and reduces inflammation.
  • Salicylic acid: This over-the-counter medication helps unclog pores.
  • Azelaic acid: This medication reduces bacteria and inflammation.
  • Topical antibiotics: These medications kill bacteria that contribute to acne. Examples include clindamycin and erythromycin.
  • Oral antibiotics: These medications are used for more severe acne. Examples include tetracycline, minocycline, and doxycycline.
  • Hormonal medications: These medications can be helpful for women with acne that is related to hormonal changes. Examples spironolactone.
  • Isotretinoin: This medication is a very effective treatment for severe acne, but it has some serious side effects and should only be used under the supervision of a doctor.
