Psoriasis: A Skin Condition Explained

Psoriasis: A Skin Condition

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes skin cells to grow too quickly. This rapid cell growth results in the buildup of thick, scaly patches on the skin’s surface. These patches, often red or silvery-white, can be itchy and painful.

Common Symptoms of Psoriasis:

  • Plaque psoriasis: This is the most common type, characterized by raised, red patches covered with silvery scales.
  • Guttate psoriasis: This type often develops rapidly, with small, red spots all over the body.
  • Inverse psoriasis: This type affects skin folds, such as under the breasts, in the groin, and under the arms.
  • Pustular psoriasis: This type causes pus-filled blisters to form on the skin.
  • Erythrodermic psoriasis: This is a severe form that covers most of the body with red, flaky skin.

Causes of Psoriasis:

The exact cause of psoriasis is unknown, but it’s believed to be linked to an overactive immune system. Certain factors can trigger or worsen psoriasis, including:

  • Stress
  • Infection
  • Injury to the skin
  • Certain medications
  • Cold weather
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol
