Ambroxol: A Mucolytic Agent

Ambroxol: A Mucolytic Agent

Ambroxol is a medication used to treat respiratory conditions characterized by excessive mucus production. It works by thinning and loosening mucus, making it easier to cough up. This can help relieve symptoms such as congestion, coughing, and difficulty breathing.

Uses:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): A lung condition that causes difficulty breathing.
  • Acute bronchitis: Inflammation of the bronchial tubes.
  • Cystic fibrosis: A genetic disorder that affects the lungs and other organs.
  • Post-operative cough: A cough that occurs after surgery.

Working:

  • Mucolytic action: Ambroxol increases the production of surfactant, a substance that helps to keep the airways moist and prevents mucus from becoming too thick.
  • Ciliary activity: It also stimulates the movement of cilia, tiny hair-like structures in the airways that help to clear mucus.

Side effects:

While generally well-tolerated, ambroxol can sometimes cause side effects, including:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Allergic reactions (rare)
