Cell Types of Mesothelioma

Cell Types of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma can also be classified based on the type of cells that compose the tumor:

Epithelioid Mesothelioma:

Description: The most common cell type, accounting for 50-70% of cases.
Characteristics: Cells are uniform and structured, making this type more responsive to treatment and associated with a better prognosis.

Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma:

Description: Comprises about 10-20% of cases.
Characteristics: Cells are spindle-shaped and less organized, leading to more aggressive behavior and a poorer prognosis.

Biphasic (Mixed) Mesothelioma:

Description: Contains both epithelioid and sarcomatoid cells.
Characteristics: The prognosis and treatment response depend on the proportion of each cell type within the tumor.
