Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that affects the peritoneum, the thin membrane lining the abdominal cavity. The primary cause of peritoneal mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos fibers.
Asbestos Exposure: The overwhelming majority of peritoneal mesothelioma cases are linked to asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in various industries for its heat resistance and insulating properties. When asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested, they can become lodged in the tissues lining the abdominal cavity, leading to inflammation and scarring over time. This chronic irritation can
