Pleural Mesothelioma (Open Surgical Biopsy)

Open Surgical Biopsy:

  • This is a more invasive procedure, typically used when other biopsy methods are inconclusive or when a larger sample is required. There are two main types:
  • Thoracotomy: Involves making a larger incision in the chest to access the pleura. It provides the surgeon with direct access to the affected area.
  • Mediastinoscopy: Involves inserting a scope through a small incision at the base of the neck to examine and take samples
  • from the mediastinum (the area between the lungs).
