Causes

Thrombus and many other substances can embolise pulmonary circulation. The causes of pulmonary embolism are given below:

1. Thrombotic

  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Right sided endocarditis
  • Atrial fibrillation

2. Non-thrombotic

  • Fat embolism post/following bone trauma or fracture
  • Amniotic fluid embolism following delivery and caesarean section
  • Septic (infective endocarditis)
  • Tumor embolism (choriocarcinoma, renal cell carcinoma)
  • Parasitic eggs (schistosomiasis)
  • Air embolism (pulmonary barotrauma in divers and during neurosurgery from central venous catheter)
