Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva also known as Stone Man Syndrome is a rare disease in which skeletal muscle and connective tissue such as tendons, ligaments gets gradually ossified. It leads to extra skeletal or heterotrophic bone formation. People with this disease are born with abnormal big toes. This Condition occurs due to mutation in ACVR1 gene and has an incidence of 1 in 1,600,000 newborns. Any Trauma may lead to long term muscle swelling and inflammation and often result in permanent bone growth in injured area.
