Genomic profiling of tumor heterogeneity and its clinical significance

Tumour heterogeneity describes genetic and molecular differences within a single tumour. Cancer cells in one mass often carry distinct mutations. Genomic profiling maps these differences in detail.

Researchers use next-generation sequencing to analyse tumour DNA. They also apply single-cell sequencing to study individual cells. Multi-region sampling further reveals spatial variation across the tumour. As a result, scientists detect both inter-tumour and intra-tumour diversity.

Genomic profiling identifies driver mutations that promote cancer growth. It also uncovers passenger mutations that accumulate over time. In addition, the technique tracks clonal evolution during disease progression. This information shows how tumours change under selective pressure.

Clinical significance emerges clearly from these findings. Heterogeneous tumours often resist uniform treatments. Some cell populations survive therapy and drive relapse. Therefore, genomic profiling helps clinicians anticipate resistance.

The approach supports precision medicine. Doctors can select targeted drugs based on the dominant and minor clones present. Moreover, repeated profiling during treatment monitors emerging resistant populations. This strategy allows timely adjustment of therapy.

Genomic data also improve prognosis assessment. High levels of heterogeneity frequently correlate with aggressive disease. Patients with diverse tumours may face higher risks of metastasis and recurrence. Consequently, profiling results guide risk stratification.

Liquid biopsy offers a less invasive option. It detects circulating tumour DNA and reflects ongoing genetic changes. Researchers combine tissue and liquid data for a more complete picture. However, technical challenges remain in sensitivity and interpretation.

Overall, genomic profiling of tumour heterogeneity advances cancer care. It reveals the complex genetic landscape of tumours. Furthermore, it enables more informed treatment decisions and better patient outcomes.
