What is Trochanteric Bursitis?

Trochanteric bursitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the trochanteric bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions the outside of the hip joint. The trochanteric bursa reduces friction between the greater trochanter (a bony prominence on the outside of the hip) and the surrounding soft tissues.

Causes of Trochanteric Bursitis

  • Repetitive motion: Activities that involve repetitive hip movements, such as running, cycling, or walking.
  • Direct trauma: A fall or direct blow to the outside of the hip.
  • Poor posture: Abnormal alignment of the spine and pelvis.
  • Muscle imbalances: Weak or tight hip muscles.
  • Overuse: Prolonged or excessive activity.

Symptoms of Trochanteric Bursitis

  • Pain: Aching or burning pain on the outside of the hip.
  • Tenderness: Pain when pressing on the outside of the hip.
  • Swelling: Redness and swelling in the affected area.
  • Limited mobility: Reduced range of motion in the hip.
  • Snapping or clicking: Audible sounds when moving the hip.

Treatment and Management

  • Rest and ice: Avoiding activities that aggravate the condition and applying ice to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Stretching and exercises: Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises to improve hip mobility and strength.
  • Physical therapy: Customized physical therapy programs to address muscle imbalances and improve hip function.
  • Pain relief medications: Over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
  • Corticosteroid injections: Injecting corticosteroids into the affected bursa to reduce inflammation.
  • Surgery: In severe cases, surgical removal of the inflamed bursa may be necessary.

Prevention

  • Maintain proper posture: Avoiding abnormal alignment of the spine and pelvis.
  • Strengthen hip muscles: Engaging in exercises that strengthen the hip muscles.
  • Use proper technique: Using proper technique when engaging in activities that involve hip movement.
  • Wear proper footwear: Wearing shoes that provide adequate support and cushioning.
