Alzheimer’s disease (Treatment and Management)

While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, treatments are available to manage symptoms and improve quality of life:

  • Medications: Drugs like cholinesterase inhibitors (e.g., donepezil, rivastigmine, and galantamine) and NMDA receptor antagonists (e.g., memantine) can help manage symptoms, particularly in the early to moderate stages. Newer treatments, such as monoclonal antibodies like aducanumab, aim to target the underlying disease process by reducing amyloid plaques in the brain.
  • Cognitive Therapies: Cognitive stimulation therapy and other non-drug interventions can help maintain cognitive function and delay the progression of symptoms.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: A healthy diet, regular exercise, social engagement, and mental stimulation may help reduce the risk of cognitive decline and support overall brain health.
  • Supportive Care: Caregivers play a crucial role in managing Alzheimer’s disease. Support groups, respite care, and professional in-home care services can provide assistance and relieve caregiver burden.
