Kaposi sarcoma is a type of cancer that affects the skin and mucous membranes. It is caused by the human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) and is most commonly seen in people with weakened immune systems. The disease appears as red or purple lesions on the skin, which can be flat or raised and may be painful or itchy. Kaposi sarcoma can also affect internal organs, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, abdominal pain, and nausea.
