Pleural Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that develops in the pleura, the thin layer of tissue surrounding the lungs and lining the chest cavity. This type of mesothelioma is primarily associated with exposure to asbestos, a mineral once widely used in construction, shipbuilding, and other industries.

1. Asbestos Exposure:

The primary cause of pleural mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos fibers. Inhalation of asbestos particles can lead to the development of cancer in the pleura over several decades.

2. Latency Period:

There is a long latency period between asbestos exposure and the development of pleural mesothelioma. The cancer may take 20 to 50 years or more to manifest after initial exposure.

3. Tumor Formation:

Pleural mesothelioma begins with the formation of tumors in the pleura. These tumors can be diffuse or localized and may interfere with lung function and breathing.

4. Symptoms:

Common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include chest pain, shortness of breath, persistent cough, fatigue, weight loss, and difficulty swallowing.

5. Diagnosis:

Diagnosing pleural mesothelioma often involves imaging tests such as CT scans and MRIs, as well as a biopsy to confirm the presence of cancer cells.
