It is a type of hair loss that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles (immune-mediated reaction or autoimmunity). The damage is usually not permanent and the characteristics of the condition are:
- The lesions are well-defined, single or multiple, round or oval areas of complete hair loss.
- Asymptomatic, non-inflammatory, and non-scarring lesions.
- Beard region
- Any hair bearing region
- Alopecia Totalis – Whole scalp
- Alopecia Universalis – Scalp and body
