Piriformis Muscle

It originates from the anterior portion of the sacrum and superior margin of the greater sciatic notch and gets inserted into the greater trochanter of the femur. It is innervated by the nerve to piriformis and blood supply is through the inferior and superior gluteal artery and lateral sacral artery. It’s chief action is external rotation of hip and abduction of flexed thigh which helps in walking. Clinically, piriformis syndrome occurs when piriformis muscle irritates the sciatic nerve causing pain in the buttocks that radiates along the sciatic nerve distribution.
