Quadratus lumborum muscle
It originates from iliolumbar ligament and internal lip of posterior part of iliac crest and gets inserted into the lower border of 12th rib and tips of transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae L1-L5. It is innervated through the 12th thoracic nerve and ventral rami of lumbar nerves L1-L4 and artery supply is through the lumbar arteries and lumbar branch of iliolumbar artery. It’s chief action is lateral flexion with ipsilateral contraction and extension of vertebrae column, elevates ilium bone (hip hiking) with ipsilateral contraction and fixes of 12th rib during forced expiration. Clinically injury to Quadratus lumborum is one of the common cause of low back pain.
