The Genetic Cause

A mutation occurs in the WAS gene. This gene controls a protein that helps immune cells function. When the protein fails, white blood cells cannot respond properly.

At the same time, platelets become unusually small and low in number. Consequently, patients bruise and bleed easily.

Key Symptoms

Doctors often describe a classic triad. Patients show recurrent infections. They also develop eczema. In addition, they experience frequent bleeding.

Nosebleeds and bloody stools may appear early. Skin rashes often resemble severe eczema. Repeated ear and lung infections follow due to weak immunity.

Diagnosis

Doctors start with a blood test. They notice low platelet counts with small platelet size. Then, they measure immunoglobulin levels and immune cell function.

Genetic testing confirms the mutation in the WAS gene. This step provides a final diagnosis.

Treatment and Management

Supportive care begins early. Doctors give antibiotics to prevent infections. They also use immunoglobulin therapy to strengthen immunity.

However, the only curative treatment is a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. This procedure replaces the faulty immune system. Therefore, early diagnosis improves survival.
