Tenosynovitis: Causes and Prevalence

Tenosynovitis is inflammation of the tendon sheath, often causing pain and stiffness. It can occur in various parts of the body, including hands, wrists, feet, and ankles.
Causes
  • Repetitive motion or overuse
  • Injury or trauma
  • Infection
  • Rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory conditions
Prevalence
Tenosynovitis can affect anyone, but it’s more common in:
  • Athletes or individuals with repetitive motion jobs
  • People with certain medical conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • Older adults, due to wear and tear on tendons
Symptoms
  • Pain or tenderness
  • Swelling or redness
  • Stiffness or limited mobility
  • Crepitus (grinding sensation)
Treatment
  • Rest and ice
  • Physical therapy
  • Medications (e.g., anti-inflammatory)
  • Surgery (in severe cases)
