Understanding Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. They are often called stress headaches because they are caused by muscle tension in the head and neck. This tension can be caused by stress, anxiety, poor posture, or even caffeine withdrawal.

Tension headaches typically feel like a tight band squeezing your head. The pain is usually mild to moderate and can last for several hours or even days. In some cases, tension headaches can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and sound.

There are several things you can do to relieve tension headaches, including:

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers: Such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
  • Relaxation techniques: Such as deep breathing or massage.
  • Stress management: Such as yoga or meditation.

If your tension headaches are severe or you are experiencing other symptoms, such as nausea or vomiting, you should see a doctor.
