Ecchymosis is the medical term for a bruise. It occurs when blood vessels under the skin rupture, causing blood to pool and create a visible discoloration. Bruises typically appear as a dark purple or blue mark, but can change color as they heal, turning green, yellow, or brown.
Causes of Ecchymosis:
- Trauma: Bruises are most commonly caused by injuries such as bumps, falls, or blows.
- Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions can increase the risk of bruising, including:
- Blood clotting disorders (e.g., hemophilia)
- Liver disease
- Kidney disease
- Vitamin K deficiency
- Certain medications (e.g., blood thinners, corticosteroids)
Treatment of Ecchymosis:
- Most bruises heal on their own without any specific treatment.
Applying ice packs to the bruised area for the first 24-48 hours can help reduce swelling and pain. - Elevating the bruised area above the level of the heart can also help reduce swelling.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain.
