Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy

Progressive muscle weakness and loss of sensation in the extremities characterize CIDP, or Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, a neurological disorder. An autoimmune condition, CIDP means the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own nerves.

Key features of CIDP:
  • Progressive muscle weakness: This often begins in the feet and legs but can spread to the hands and arms over time.
  • Loss of sensation: Numbness, tingling, or pain may be felt in the extremities.
  • Muscle wasting: In severe cases, muscles may shrink due to disuse.
  • Autonomic dysfunction: This can lead to problems with blood pressure, digestion, and bladder control.
