Management

Cardiac arrest due to bradyarrhythmias or asystole is managed differently. The steps of management are:

  • Intubation, I.V. access and suctioning of obstructing secretions. Heimlich manoeuvre for removal of foreign body. Confirm asystole.
  • CPR is continued.
  • Control hypoxemia with oxygen (O2) therapy and acidosis by NaHCO3 (1mEq/1 kg I.V.)
  • Adrenaline 1mg or atropine (1mg) is given I.V. or intra cardiac depending on the cause.
  • External pacing to establish a regular cardiac rhythm.
