Rectus abdominis muscle

It originates from the pubic crest, pubis symphysis and pubic tubercle and gets inserted into the costal cartilage of 5-7th ribs ans xiphoid process of sternum. It is innervated by T7-T11 segment of thoraco-abdominal nerves and subcostal nerve (T12) and blood supply is through the inferior epigastric artery. It’s chief action is flexion of the lumbar spine and it also assists in breathing during forceful exhalation. Clinically pulled abdominal muscle occurs due to strain in rectus abdominis muscle and rectus sheath hematoma occurs because of accumulation of blood in the sheath of rectus abdominis muscle.
