Symptoms of Hypothyroidism or Low Thyroid Levels

Standard treatment for hypothyroidism involves daily use of the synthetic thyroid hormone Levothyroxine.

So what is levothyroxine we will know about it here.

Levothyroxine is a manufactured form of Thyroxine (T4). It is used to treat thyroid deficiency, thyroid tumors. It is taken orally or in injectable form.

SIDE EFFECTS
Too high a dose of levothyroxine causes hyperthyroidism. Overdose can result in heart palpitations, abdominal pain, nausea, anxiousness, confusion, agitation, insomnia, weight loss, and increased appetite.Allergic reactions to the drug are characterized by symptoms such as difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, or swelling of the face and tongue. Acute overdose may cause fever, hypoglycemia, heart failure, coma, and unrecognized adrenal insufficiency.

DOSAGE

Hormonal Therapy may begin at full replacement dose in a healthy individual less than 50 years old and in those older than 50 years who have been recently treated for hyperthyroidism or who have been hypothyroid for only a short period of time.
In older people or those with coronary artery disease, the initiation of thyroid replacement therapy is usually done more gradually, beginning with 25 to 50 mcg daily and increasing over time.
Average full replacement dose: 1.7 mcg/kg/day (e.g., 100 to 125 mcg/day for a 70 kg adult) orally
Older patients may require less than 1 mcg/kg/day
Doses greater than 200 mcg/day orally are seldom required.

Proper Iodine Intake in diet is important as Iodine is an essential mineral for thyroid function. Iodine deficiency is one of the most common causes of goitre development, or abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland.
