It originates from the temporal process of zygomatic bone, anterior 2/3rd of the inferior border, posterior 1/3rd of the lateral border of zygomatic arch and gets inserted into the angle of mandible, upper and inferior half and lateral surface of ramus of the mandible. It is innervated by the mandibular nerve and artery supply is through the masseteric artery. It’s chief action is elevation and protusion of mandible.
