Definition and Brief Outline

Crigler-Najjar Syndrome is a rare inherited disorder characterized by inability to convert and clear bilirubin from the body. It is of two types

Crigler-Najjar Syndrome I

Crigler-Najjar Syndrome II or Arias Syndrome

It is specifically characterized by unconjugated Hyperbilirubinemia i.e body is unable to convert toxic unconjugated bilirubin to non toxic conjugated bilirubin because of glucuronyl transferase deficiency leading to severe brain damage in infants. It is an Autosomal Recessive inherited disorder.
