Herniorrhaphy, also known as hernia repair surgery, is a surgical procedure used to correct inguinal hernias by pushing the protruding tissue back into the abdomen and repairing the weakened area of the abdominal wall.
Open Herniorrhaphy (Open Repair):
- This traditional approach involves making an incision in the inguinal area to directly access and repair the hernia.
- The surgeon pushes the herniated tissue back into the abdomen and repairs the defect in the abdominal wall,
- often reinforcing it with a synthetic mesh (referred to as hernioplasty).
Types of Open Repair:
- Tension Repair: The hernia is repaired by stitching the tissue together without the use of mesh. This method is less common due to a higher risk of recurrence.
- Tension-Free Repair (Hernioplasty): A mesh is placed over or under the defect to reinforce the abdominal wall, reducing tension on the repaired tissue and lowering the risk of recurrence.
